An insurance shot of a species that to be honest I didn't know even existed when I opened up the traps on that fateful day. A full year later I then spotted an awfully similar looking thing on the Portland Birds Ob's Website ... a rather hasty check of my previous years photos, hoping beyond hope that I hadn't deleted the images taken at the time, and hey presto there is was ... a third sighting for the UK at the time. Up till now [summer of 2018] I believe there's only been one other?

A very poorly marked specimen taken here in June of 2019. I thought it might be something really unusual for a while. Both of the Highflyers are hugely variable but usually show some green scaling whereas this one is just vaguely dark coloured.

1782a Horisme radicaria - Cryptic Fern
Habitat/Food plant: I am not sure, probably the same as with The Fern?
Broods/flight period: Single brooded, flying a little earlier that H. tesrsata.
1999 - 2023 garden records:
The above specimen was taken on 16th May 2022 and shows the strong crosslines associated with H. radicaria forming a bar attached to the strongly marked apical streak. It also lacks the discal spot shown by radicaria, also the pale 'shoulders' are another pointer. The early date of capture fits too.
Status: Unknown. In the late 2010's it turned out that this species, very similar as it is to the usual Fern moths, had been hiding in plain sight but had been completely overlooked for however long. It was finally identified by gen/det analysis in 2019 after which time a few more specimens have been logged after a session in lab somewhere in the deepest UK. It is a moth of the near continent and no doubt has become a colonist at some time in the past.

One or two presumed specimens fitting the visual criteria have been seen in recent years. Gen/det analysis is required for a proper identification and none of my possible Cryptics have been retained.

Habitat/Food plant: Open woodland, hedgerows, roadside verges etc. The larval food plant is the flowers and seeds of Red Campion.

Status: Scarce.
Habitat/Food plant: Quiet varied, woodland, hedgerows, marshland etc. The larval food plants are Common Hemp-nettle and possibly Hedge Woundwort.
Broods/flight period: Single brooded, flying from early June till August.
Earliest date: 10th July 2015.
Latest date: 25th August 2010.

Status: Scarce.
Habitat/Food plant: Most numerous on chalk downland and other calcareous places with short turf. The larval food plants are the ripening seeds of Red Bartisia and Eyebright.

1807 Perizoma flavofasciata - Sandy Carpet
My only sighting at the time of Sandy Carpet here which flew off before I could set it up for a proper photo. All I have is this overly naff insurance shot. About two weeks later I saw another which flew off before I could even pot it up.

Status: Scarce.
Habitat/Food plant: Woodland and moorland. The larval food plants are varied including Heather, Sallow, Greater Stitchwort, Red Campion, Willowherbs and Cow Parsley.

Earliest date: 4th July 2012.
